I first would like to say that I am a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and that is a priority in my life. I put that before any other part of my life. There are certain responsibilities that come with that. I am not a political person and I am not looking to endorse a political candidate. As a Christian I do have certain obligations and requirements and they come from the authority of the scriptures. As a Christian I believe that Jesus Christ died so that I can have eternal life and therefore my obligation is to Him and His church.
The reason I feel inclined to mention that is because recently I have come under attack because of my writings concerning people’s doctrines and Philosophies. I had people ask me how I could say that a person is not a Christian just because they do not follow Jesus. I also have people question my political motivations for questioning Barack Obama’s faith. I assure you I am not running for public office and I am not on John McCain’s payroll.
The sad thing is that as an African American man I am expected to blindly support Senator Barack Obama in his bid for the Whitehouse; unfortunately I do not operate like that. As I have previously stated my main agenda is speaking out for things that I feel are priorities to God. Those 2 issues are pro-life issues and the protection of the institution of marriage. I will not vote for a candidate that does not share my same views on these 2 issues. That is a personal thing with me; you have the right under our constitution to not only differ with my opinion but to vote for whoever you like.
I do understand why so many people of color have such a passion for Senator Obama. I just want to shed a little light to white America on what is going on in the hearts and minds of the African American community.
The first thing is identification; because black people in America were stripped of their identity and much of their heritage we have been seeking to regain that for hundreds of years. We therefore, sometimes hold fast on anything that can help us to regain our culture and identity as a race. Our music, our style, and all the things that make us as a people unique to the rest of the world are things that we cherish.
The second thing is reparation; because many African Americans feel as though we have never truly dealt with the horrible institution of slavery that was legal for hundreds of years; we as a people sometime look for anything that we can deem as a payback, or as a form of closure for the pain and hurt that stripped us of our manhood and our humanness not only during the time of legalized slavery but even during the time of the “Jim Crow” era that denied us of our basic human rights. The most ironic part of this is that we as blacks now allow our unborn children to be murdered through abortion based on the same faulty logic that counted the black man as not fully human. But that is an entire story altogether. The thing that makes it worse is that the US government has given reparations to other groups that have been wronged such as the Japanese people during WWII. Blacks up to this point have not received anything of the sort.
As much as I like Senator Obama and would love to support him, I can’t. He is very articulate and intelligent. He has a lot of qualifications that make him a good leader. In good conscious I cannot vote for a person that is that far to the left on Abortion and gay marriage. Because I realize that my relationship to God and what His expectations for me are I have to stand with my faith. The issues of basic human rights and marriage are the very foundation of a civilized society and if we do not get these correct then the economy, healthcare, etc. will be irrelevant.
As a black man I reserve the right to make a choice. I am not telling you who to vote for and I am not saying that I will definitely vote for John McCain. What I am saying is that I put a high priority on my belief in the sanctity of life and the institution of marriage as the very foundation in which civilization rests upon. My vote will reflect what the most important issues of the day are. I will not allow color, gender, or political party to overshadow the issues that must be done in accordance to the will of my creator.
May God bless us all!
Nice article Pastor Green. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone as a black man who chooses to unashamedly declare his proffession of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. . . on his “ballot”. I am a 44 yr. old born-again believer in Jesus Christ. I happen to be black. Frankly I am extremely disgusted with the African-American Christian community for their continued blind support of the Democratic party. A party that is (generally) diabolically opposed to the will of God. I admire your grace and elloquence with which you explained your opposition to the candicy of Barack Obama. I need to work on “sharing the truth in love”. I can sometime allow my passion to come across as hatefull. Pray for me. Anyway, It just blows me away to see christians dance, shout, and declare that God is there Jehovah-Gireh on Sunday . . . and go to the polls and vote for everything they claim they do not support. It just blows me away! When will we cast a vote for righteousness?? The Proverbs declare “Righteousness exalts a nation”. Do we not realize that the “blood of 52 million babies are crying out from the ground”. Is our God deaf that he shall not hear? Does he turn a blind eye to the spilling of innocent blood.
Keep up the good work my brother in Christ. you are certainly a minority among minorities. but, you are not alone, there are still “7000 that has not bowed the knee to Baal”.
God bless you, and Heaven smile upon you.
I wonder how many African-Americans know that Martin Luther King jr. was a Republican?

It’s disturbing how many “Black Christians” blindly support Barak Obama just because he is Black but ignore his voting record and his postition on the issues of abortion, gay marriage and illegal immigration just to name a few. His beliefs are in contradiction to the Word of God.
I can not ignore the teachings of Christ while I’m in the voting booth. Therefore, I can not vote for Barak Obama. There isn’t much difference between Obama and McCain and I will not vote for either candidate. For the first time, I will vote for a third party candidate who I believe will uphold the U.S. Constitution and the civil liberties for all Americans.
Mr Green you are truely a man of God
yes, you are a man of God

Mr Green; first of all let me say I truly appreicate your stand for our Lord. I will try to pray for you as often as I can.
I wish everyone could look past color to the character of a person, but as long as we are in a world filled with sinful people this can ‘t be until those same people are saved and learn to love others as Jesus loves them.
As a Christian I have a reponsibility to vote for those whose priciples and convictions align closest to the Scriptures. I hope others will do the same so we can all work together to get our country back on track; especially in the area of restoring our country to “one nation under GOD”!
Joe Green, you are a man of God. I appreciate your viewpoint. I am a caucasion man who has taught at an HBCU for almost 11 years out of a calling from the Lord. I love all people, but I can’t even say the words you say for fear of losing my job. I love Jesus more than anything, but even at a Christian HBCU, they do not agree with what you have said.
May God richly bless your ministry, sir.
Thank you so much. I appreciate your honesty and bravery. Although I am white I would have NO problem voting for Barack Obama if he had any Christian principals. I can’t help but ask “What would Jesus do?”
Joe, I for one totally and wholeheartedly agree with and support your position. I am totally taken aback by our people who just “get it”. As I’ve explained on sooooo many different occasions recently; This race is NOT about “party”, this race is NOT about “gender,” yhis race is NOT about “race”… It truly is about God’s will and who I believe BEST” EXEMPLIFIES” the carrying out of His will… It is and always has been a very personal decision that each of us has to make AND live with the consequences thereof…
I just pray that those who have eyes but cannot see will begin to see and those who have ears but do not hear will begin to hear…
I COULDN’T AGREE MORE. I AM A BLACK WOMAN, AND I DEAL WITH THE HATRED EVERYDAY OF NOT SUPPORTING B.O NOR HILLARY WHEN SHE WAS IN THE RUNNING. I AM NOT FOR MCCAIN EITHER BECAUSE HE FLIP FLOPS, THE ONLY REASON I WILL PULL THE LEVER FOR HIM IS PALIN. I AM STILL NOT 100% SURE OF THAT EITHER. I MIGHT STILL WRITE IN HUCKABEE. I HAVE NO DOUBT HOWEVER THAT B.O. WILL WIN. IT ABSOLUTELY BOGGLES MY MIND HOW SO MANY SO CALLED BORN AGAIN BELIEVERS, IGNORE THAT FACTS THAT, B.O. STANDS FOR EVERYTHING JESUS OPPOSES AND VICE-VERSA. I CAN NO WAY VOTE FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE MADE PUBLIC STATEMENTS OF THEIR TOTAL DISREGUARD OF OUR SAVIOR THEN CLAIMS TO BE HIS FOLLOWER. I SAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR SPEAKING OUT AND STANDING FIRM ON OUR TRUE FOUNDATION.
THANK YOU AND I AM ANOTHER IN YOUR CORNER.
Dear Sir:
I totally agree that we as Christians should not blindly support any candidate as the result of party affiliation or race. To me, such behavior is equivalent to idolatry.
As a resident of Arizona, I have actually had the ability to have one of the presidential candidates as a senator. On an occasion roughly four years ago, I wrote that senator to request that he support a constitutional amendment defining marriage. I also wrote my other senator, John Kyl.
Senator Kyl’s office returned my email and actually voted for the amendment. My other senator did neither.
As an African-American born-again believer, it is my inclination to vote for a candidate that reflects my values. Upon hearing one of the vice president candidates indicate that abortion is a “states rights” issue. This phrase revived memories from the days of segregation. If something is abhorrent to the Lord, that abhorrence does not stop at a state border.
After 8 years of having a born-again believer in the White House, this time I’m going to check the fruit (Matthew 16:7).
I will be voting for the candidate that has remained faithful in his marriage and tells me his position on each issue, regardless of the consequences.
Thank you for an opportunity to comment on such an important issue.
You Go Jo Green,
40+ years and still registered as a Democrat, I totally agree. God and His will FIrst! I will be voting for the McCain/Palin ticket and be on them constantly to make sure they don’t slip and hold them to what they say. I pray continually that all God fearing Christians don’t turn their backs to what the Bible teaching.
AMEN! I AM A WHITE MAN AND I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE COLOR OF A MAN’S SKIN I WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR MY COUNTRY.
I DONT REALLY LIKE EITHER CANIDATE BUT I FEEL LED TO VOTE REPULICAN . I AM LIKE DONNA OWENS IT IS SARAH PALIN WHO I WILL REALLY BE VOTING FOR. I MAY JUST VOTE FOR JOE GREEN!!
MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU.
P.S. THANK YOU FOR BEING A VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS. WE NEED ALL THAT WE CAN GET IN THESE LAST DAYS….OR HOURS.
Thank The Lord for you Pastor for courage to tell the TRUTH!!!!
In Christ Alone,
Pastor Charles W. Simmons Sr.
Amen brother, I’m with you, but I’ll go a step further. I’m not voting for John McCain either. I keep hearing that McCain is the “lesser of two evils”, basically because of his position that abortion be allowed if it is rape or incest…and also his position to allow gay unions while not supporting gay marriage, and his position on stem cell research.
LOL…news flash! There is nowhere in the Bible that God ever tells us to support any kind of evil. Romans 13 tells us that God appoints our leaders…the ones we deserve…
Has anyone noticed how far downhill we are sliding with every subsequent election?
Pastor Green,
I am so glad to see men and women of all races / who are standing up for Righteousness and realizing that this election is really going to affect the direction of this Nation more than any other races in the past. I am voting for McCain, not because I believe he is a godly man/ he is a flawed man /woman like all of us / but he believes that a child is a child at conception. He has chosen a Christian as a running mate. He loves America and will do what is right for our Country / and I don’t believe that will happen with the Democratic Ticket. May God bless you for taking a stand / and I hope that Christians across this nation will pray and seek God’s face and forgiveness for becoming complacent and not taking a stand / and not confessing our national sins and personal sins to God. If we all pray perhaps God will hear our prayers and come and heal our Nation once again, but we need to get back on track / or Sodom and Gomorrah will look like a picnic compared to America.
I’ve followed this election closely since January. While I’ve wondered off and on (before Palin) what happened to the block of “values voters” who put W. in the Oval Office , I haven’t wondered until just now what it was like for people who Love God, Love the Bible and Love Barack Obama.
I’m a Believer - not a grew up in the church/read about it in a book belief, but a true bone-deep conviction born from one miraculous God encounter after another. I’m a Believer in Jesus as the resurrected from the dead son of God, the Bible as the God-breathed/inspired Word of God, and the Holy Spirit as a daily guide/presence in my life & my heart transforming me into the image of Christ. I even believe in Biblical prophecy.
But I can’t side with the vision a McCain-Palin White House would create of this country and this world. Division. War. Blind Patriotism. It’s revolting to me.
I can’t side with the faith so many “Christians” have in the inevitable apocalyptic and imminent destruction of the world. A McCain-Palin White House would only feed hatred & fuel more suicide bombers. Who in their right mind would want that?
I must believe God has a future and a hope for us. I must have faith that it ISN’T too late. I believe God when He promised (through his prophet Jeremiah) that if Israel returned to Him, the destruction looming over them because they broke covenant would be averted. God promised He would relent. Unfortunately, the children of Israel had reached the point of no return and the destruction Jeremiah prophesied came to pass - and God then promised He would see them through it.
I must believe it isn’t too late for our country. I must have faith that there are enough good people who can hope hard enough, pray hard enough, and hold the vision of a better America to alter the course of destruction the current Republican White House occupants have put us on.
I must believe God will relent.
So I guess I answer my own query “what’s it like for people who Love God, Love the Bible and Love Barack Obama”? If we opt for hope (as I do) - we vote November 4th for Barack Obama.
joe,
thank you to know that there are people out there that can hold the line and stay on course brings tears to my eyes, tears of joy. reading your post along with the comments will help me sleep tonight.
by the way there is a huge devide between hope and faith.
may god bless you all
I am so glad to have found this site and read these comments. I am trying to understand why people are so blindly following after Obama and not finding out more about him and his character. It scares me that the population is so much behind someone they really don’t know about. The black liberation theology doesn’t seem right to me, promoting hate of white people, how can that bring us all together? I never had one “racial” thought in my mind until I saw Rev. Wright on TV. If you have a comment to help me get past this, please email me because I’m finding that it is affecting my attitude. Thank You.
Mr. Green I couldn’t disagree with you more. It is this same errant theology that elected GW Bush not once but twice. How did that work out for us?
When are you going to wake up and realize that you are being fooled into voting for an individual simply by a declaration that they are pro-choice or against gay marriage.
Does separation of church and state mean anything to you?
The President is not elected to represent your theological views. He represents the people of this republic, which if you had not realized is not strictly populated by Christians.
Over and over I see Christians wanting to prevent gay marriage and a women’s right to choose. Why stop there? Why not pass legislation for every moral decision? Maybe you would to pass a law that mandates everyone be a Christian.
You see this is a direct reflection of your failure as a Christian. Rather than passing laws you should be concerned with changing minds. If you are a man of faith than you also believe that the holy spirit works to change the hearts of the people you are trying to save. How many people have you saved by passing legislation? How many hearts can you direct to Christ by manipulating the law? Zero!
You can prevent a man from legally marrying a man but have you saved his soul ? You have not changed what is in his heart.
You cannot consider taking away choice a victory for Christ!
I am so glad to read these comments. I am a caucasian woman who has been going to a church where I am only one of two caucasians who attend the church. I was so confused on Sunday when the Pastor was promoting Obama in his sermon. I am wrestling with how you can encourage that many people to support such unbiblical views. I think these are the times when we can so easily become deceived by the worldy schemes. We have to hold fast to our faith and stay strong in our beliefs. When we make the decision to follow Christ we commit to giving every area of our life over to Him. It is serious business!
2OsfV4 Thanks for good post
Amen! Thanks for the right on post. God’s blessings, James.
