Ephesians 1:  1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:  2Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.  3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:  4According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:  5Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,  6To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved………….

9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:……….. 11In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will.

As we enter into the New Year I believe that it is a time for us to reflect. The Jews have a concept of looking back with the intent of shaping the future. I believe that is why self-examination and introspection is so very important. The beginning of a year should be a time in which we look over the past year in order to assess where we are going in the upcoming year.

I recently watched parts of a CNN special entitled “Black in America”, hosted by Soledad O’Brien. I must say for the record that I admire Ms. O’Brien; I believe that she is a very talented reporter. I also admire her efforts to tackle the topic of race relations in America. I must say, however, that in one segment I believe that the show went way off course.

I recently came across an article that a few years ago would have shocked me. I am saddened to say that it disappointed me a great deal, but didn’t really bother me like it would have in the past. The headline to the article proclaimed, “Gay Bishop Will Open Inaugural Weekend”. New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson has been invited to offer a prayer, at the Lincoln Memorial, for an inaugural event for President-elect Barack Obama. The article goes on to quote the bishop in saying,” he doesn’t yet know what he’ll say, but he knows he won’t use a Bible”. However, the statement I found most absurd was when Robinson declared, “I will be careful not to be especially Christian in my prayer. This is a prayer for the whole nation”.
First things first; prayer is communication between man and God. When a Christian prays he should have a purpose behind it. He is speaking directly to God. It is an awesome privilege that the Creator of the universe allows us to speak directly to Him. If we are speaking solely for the benefit of another human, then we are not praying. We are simply talking or giving a speech. If a Christian Bishop does not pray a Christian prayer, then what would be the purpose of praying at all? To pray in any other way would be fruitless.

While reading a recent article for Newsweek written by Lisa Miller entitled “Our Mutual Joy” (Published Dec 6, 2008 from the Newsweek magazine issue dated Dec 15, 2008), my first reaction was to scream out loud. I then began to sift through a myriad of scriptural quotes that were taken out of context, and the misrepresented concepts that showed little understanding of the tone and spirit of the scriptures.  It has been said of Ms. Miller’s article that, “The Newsweek Cover story “Our Mutual Joy” is flawed on so many levels that it is hard to begin to correct it, yet a correction is warranted.” And so, I will do my best to sift through it, and to offer a true Christian perspective on the sacred institution of marriage, based upon the Holy Scriptures.  I would like to address some of the factual misconceptions.

In June 2007, during a speech, Senator Barack Obama had made the declaration “America is no longer a Christian nation”. This is a statement with which I strongly concur.  Although an estimated 70-80% of Americans claim to be Christians, I am led to believe that only about 30% of these people live a true Christian lifestyle.

I would like to make a few statements that have recently been considered controversial, but that should not offend those who believe the Word of God is Truth.

Friday Five: Dr. Neil and Briar

Whitehead

Their research demonstrates homosexuality is not innate.

The National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) recently held its annual convention in Denver.

Dr. Neil Whitehead was the keynote speaker at the Nov. 7-9 event. His wife, Briar, also spoke.

The Whiteheads are co-authors of My Genes Made Me Do It! A Scientific Look at Sexual Orientation and have lived and worked in India, France, Japan, Afghanistan and the U.S. They currently reside in New Zealand.

Dr. Whitehead has published more than 130 scientific papers. He holds his Ph.D. in biochemistry and worked as a scientist with the New Zealand government for 24 years. He has now been a consultant for seven years.

Briar Whitehead is a journalist, researcher, writer and speaker. She is the author of Craving for Love and God Speaks from a Little Box.

The Whiteheads spoke with CitizenLink during the Denver conference.

1. Dr. Whitehead, you’ve done extensive research in the area of homosexuality. What have you found with regard to the causes of male homosexuality?

There are multiple causes, and some of them are sexual abuse and failure to identify with the masculine world, sometimes a rebellion against it, sometimes exclusion and bullying by peers, sometimes failure to copy a father.

The twin studies show that genetics could not be a high factor. If you have identical twins, they have the same genes and probably the same family environment. So, if you have identical twins, one of whom is homosexual, will the other be homosexual, as well? Only about 10 percent of the time. That means it’s mostly not genetic.

2. In the United States, there is a lot of resistance to helping people who have unwanted same-sex attractions. Do you find that in New Zealand, as well?

Indeed. There are far fewer therapists in New Zealand (interested in such therapy).

3. Briar, how did you get into all this?

I’m a writer by training. I thought I might look at homosexuality; it just interested me. I found a fellow who had been a homosexual activist and prostitute, who had become a Christian, who had had an experience that was so profound of God’s love that he wanted to get out of homosexuality. I met him and I thought, “Wouldn’t it be good to do a racy biography of this guy? It could sell well.”

We started with interviewing, and I found I had no empathy whatsoever. I was very switched off by what he had to say about what he did. And then God took me on a crisis in which I discovered … a series of emotional dependencies in my life on men old enough to be my father. I could not break these things. I could not shake these things. If I relocated geographically, I would find another one. And I would hook in again, and my emotional world would shrink down to the size of this person who I could not do without.

And God healed me of this. He profoundly spoke to me and explained the reasons for this, and at the end of it I found I was able to empathize with the homosexual person. The book I wrote was called Craving for Love.

4. Dr. Neil, modern psychiatry says that if you treat someone for homosexuality, you are doing them harm. Is that true?

No. There haven’t been any studies which have shown conclusive, significant harm. One study, which looked deliberately for harm, found a lessening of suicides afterward. So, therapy must be doing a tower of good.

5. Briar, how do you respond to those who say, “I’ve read your book, but I don’t think that can work for me”?

God deals with us as individuals. There are different paths for different people. We’re uniquely made, and God relates with us uniquely. And what heals one person will not necessarily heal another. But there are things you can find in common. When it comes to homosexuality, you can get out of this thing. It’s not quick; it’s a process. But it is a steady movement out.

As an African American, I would love to be overjoyed by the recent election of a black man to become the President of the United States of America. It has been a long time coming. Many blacks that have passed on, would love to have seen the day that this country would vote for a person of color to hold the highest office in the land.  I will be praying for our newly elected President, but unfortunately as a Minister of the Gospel I am very much afraid of what President Obama stands for.

This has been a very interesting election to say the least. Both parties are pulling out all the stops. It is more interesting how loosely the term “Christian” is being thrown around.

I preface my writings by first stating that I am a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. My loyalty first goes to Jesus Christ. Everything that I say and everything that I believe is filtered through the filter of Christianity. All my views and all my beliefs are bounced off the authority of scripture. I therefore have surrendered my will, my opinions, and everything else to my belief in what God says in His Word, the Holy Bible. That is how it is supposed to be; if you read and understand the Bible in its entirety it is about the creator of the universe demonstrating His love and His power for mankind through His inerrant word.

No matter what anyone tells you it is foolish to not try to find out what a person believes before you vote for them. If we ignore the very core beliefs of the candidates that are running for office then we might as well just put names in a hat and choose the presidency that way. As a Christian the person who is running for office should reflect my morals and values. I cannot nor should I separate my vote from my values.

A while back there was this issue between Senator Obama and his former Pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, his Pastor for some 20 years. Although Senator Obama called Rev Wright a mentor and a very important person in his life, he attempted to distance himself from the negative remarks that Rev. Wright made concerning race and America. Because of Reverend Wright’s beliefs about the treatment of Black people in the US, he delivered his now infamous sermon where he stated “ G__ d__ America”.
